This research employs a mixed-method approach to assess the micro and macro factors influencing rural economic development in the peri-urban areas of Sanandaj city. The study used a multistage cluster sampling method to randomly select 60 respondents from these areas. The data for this study were collected through semi-structured interviews with experts and a questionnaire. The analysis methods included content analysis for the qualitative data, and statistical methods, neural network analysis, the Fuzzy-TOPSIS model, and spatial mapping for the quantitative data. The findings reveal that a combination of national macroeconomic issues and regional factors influences local economic developments. Nationally, the economy’s reliance on oil revenues and strengthening sectors aimed at capital accumulation have significant impacts. Regionally, factors such as the geographical location of Kurdistan province, political instability, and historical economic challenges have also played a crucial role. At the local level, social changes have emerged as the primary drivers of economic transformation, resulting in a notable shift towards a service-oriented economy and a decline in agricultural activities. The study further highlights spatial effects, including the ecological separation of populations and the formation of distinct suburban and urban areas designed to accommodate various socioeconomic groups in the peri-urban region.
