One of the most essential issues in Middle East like the rest of the world is transboundary water management that has many aspects such as the political aspect, the economical aspect, the environmental aspect, the social aspect and etc. Transboundary water resources have provided chances that are a threat in case of mismanagement. Thus, peace and friendly relationship between countries are giving way to conflict and dispute. Transboundary water plays a critical role in sustainable development of countries in region especially in developing countries like Iran. Iran has shared several transboundary rivers and basins with all of its neighbors and among them, Iraq and Turkey are the most important ones because of their ancient relationships together and their political positions. Cooperation among these three countries in every field always create useful results and this cooperation is needed more than ever now because of water, energy and food security. In this paper, we have an overview on the importance of this issue and its challenges and we recommend some solutions. Also, the overall situation of water resources in the three countries is studied. We hope this paper can help shed more light on water allocation among upstream and downstream countries to inform transboundary river management in Middle East.
