Varamin plain, located in southeast of Tehran, is an arid region and has intensive cultivation. Lack of adequate surface water, inappropriate application and overexploitation of ground water resources over past decades have lead to withdrawl of water table in this region. This research attempts to investigate the effects of precipitation fluctuation on water table variation in Varamin plain using the trend between these factors to find any probable correlation. Based on the results of current research over a period of 1964-2002, water table of the plain has withdraw with on annual average depth and total depth of 0.67 m and 22.33 m respectively. Also, the precipitation over the 38 years of study shows high variability without any trend. Also, the research determined that there is no significant correlation between the variables. It appears that annual precipitation does not directly affect the water table. Meanwhile, it shows that other factors such as inadequate surface water resources especially in Gajroud and high rate of exploitation from ground water resources without considering technical recommendations are responsible for water table withdrawal even in years with normal precipitation.
