The reaction between dibenzoylacetylene and enol systems, such as acetylaceton, cyclohexane-1,3-dione or 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione in the presence of triphenylphosphine in THF/H2O leads to tetracarbonyl compound and 2-hydroxybenzofuran derivatives respectively. Subsequent tetracarbonyl compound undergoes cyclization reaction in acidic dichloromethane at room temperature to produces known tetrasubstituted furan. Also 2-hydroxybenzofuran derivatives undergo elimination reaction in acidic dichloromethane to produce known furan derivatives.
