Many damage indices have been expanded to determine the damage of structures under earthquake ground motions in recent years. These indices, among which drift ratio is one of most practical indices because of easy calculating and understanding and has been considered as the main damage index in many standards, use different parameters to estimate damage of structures. The aim of this research is to evaluate seismic performance of special and ordinary steel moment resistance frames (SSMRF and OSMRF) using damage indices based on the nonlinear static and dynamic analysis results. To do so, first, several frames are subjected under exciting several earthquakes and nonlinear dynamic and then static analyses are performed on all of them. Following that, performances of the frames are determined using capacity spectrum method and damage amounts are calculated at corresponding performance levels using Park-Ang damage index. The quantities of damages resulting from nonlinear dynamic are compared with those resulting from nonlinear static analysis. The results of this study show that SSMRFs have more proper seismic performance than OSMRFs. It is shown that the results of structural damage obtained based on drift ratio and stiffness, are not reliable.
