Roller compacted concrete (RCC) is a material with no-slump consistency which is transported, placed and compacted by the same equipments as used in the construction of earth and rick fill dams. The material has been used for the construction of a number of dams in several countries of the world. The dams constructed with RCC has several advantages over conventional mass concrete dam, such as saving in cement, reduction in cost, shortening of construction period, safe work execution and possibility for dam construction in accordance with geology and topography and minimizing large scale excavation required for abutments. The paper presents the concept, economy and types of RCC dam along with equipment used for construction and associated problems with type of dam construction. Mix proportion and principles of mix design and results of tests performed along with methods of laboratory compaction developed in connection with design of mix for proposed Jamrani dam are also described.
