Abstract

Due to the existing situation of Iran, which is a multi-ethical, multi-religious, mulit-lingual, and multicultural country, the need of an enduring peace through Peace Education seems to be pivital. In this study, we aimed to analyze the content of two widely used English series known as English for Schools series, published and being taught by the Iranian Ministry of Education, and American English Files, published by Oxford University Press and being taught by lots of Iranian private institutes, regarding Peace Education elements. Content analysis and interview were utilized to collect and validate our data and findings. In our study, after analyzing the content of these two series based on Peace Education elements, in order to validate our findings, we interviewed English experienced teachers of both public and private schools and institutes. According to our findings, except for two elements, namely, respect for the environment and global concerns no other elements had been covered by these two series. Consequently, to achieve sustainable peace in a country full of varieties, the policy makers of the Iranian Ministry of Education should concentrated more on this issue and take necessary future actions to modify the next editions of the books based on Peace Education elements, in the meanwhile, negotiating with Oxford University Press regarding rewriting new editions which are adjustable to the Iranian society would be the other implication and suggestion. Additionally, teachers should be aware of the elements of peace education and try to adapt and adopt the content of the books they teach to reinforce peace and eliminate violence in their classrooms.
