Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) argues that the language tends to impose structure on our perceptions of the world. Language is highly selective and encodes the reality in a particular way. There are factors which influence the selections made on a particular occasion. The selection could be related with ideology or perspective of the user. With respect to the principles of SFL, the present study attempts to apply SFL and its resources to the literary language in novels to evaluate its adequacy in probing into the implicit and explicit layers of literary language. As such, it has opted for a novel by Toni Morrison, the contemporary American novelist, entitled, The Bluest Eye (1970). The research method will focus on Hallidyan functional linguistics to analyse some passages of the aforementioned novel. In particular, the analysis will concentrate on TRANSITIVITY, MOOD, MODALITY, and THEME systems. The data extracted from the analyses will be tabulated and interpreted accordingly. Afterwards, the results of SFL will be incorporated with CDA analysis. In other words, the politics of the text become intelligible against the wider social and political context.
