Abstract

The rates of disappearance of decomposing resources have been widely measured by exposing known amounts of leaf and other litter in Litter Bags made from a mesh of an inert fibre. Weighing the material remaining at several time intervals permits the calculation of decomposition rates. The decomposition of Q.infectoria, Q.libani and Q.persica leaves litter was investigated by using 1 mm mesh litter bags. The mass loss, content of C and N of litter materials were analysed after exposure for 2, 4, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months in the field. Negative exponential curves fit the leaf litter mass loss with time for all species. Mass loss rate was in the order: Q.libani ( k=0.32 )> Q.infectoria ( k=0.28 )> Q.persica ( k=0.21 ) Leaves litter of Q.libani decomposed faster than other ywo spices. At first day, C/N ratio was: Q.Infectoria ( 76.4 )> Q. libani ( 72.5 )> Q.persica ( 57.2 )
