Abstract

Carbohydrates are the most abundant class of organic compounds found in living organisms which have received a huge interest for delivery of macromolecular drugs, vaccine development and cosmetic industry [1]. The addition of sufficient amounts of carbohydrates to aqueous solutions of polypropylene glycols (PPGs) leads to the formation of aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) [2]. ABS have been utilized in the extraction and purification of diverse biomolecules such as proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, flavor compounds, antioxidants and antibiotics [3]. This work addresses the liquid-liquid equilibrium behavior of several ternary PPG + carbohydrate + water systems, at different temperatures. The total number of hydroxyl group substituents and also their relative positions on the pyranose ring play a decisive role in the hydration extent of carbohydrates and subsequently their soluting-out strength. The immiscibility region of PPG + carbohydrate + water systems increases by increasing temperature, carbohydrate hydrophilicity and polymer molar mass
