The present study aims at scrutinizing the role of gender, as a crucial factor, in English language learning process and the learners’ success. There has been considerable controversy over the place of gender and its impact on language learning ability. Although there are differences in the way boys and girls process and learn a new language, it is generally believed that girls are more successful in language learning. Presenting a review of the related literature and the results of some scientific investigations, the present study intends to shed light on the issue of gender by taking into account the other determinants such as motivation, learning styles, social factors and mental processes. The findings of the study indicate that there is a meaningful correlation between gender and second language proficiency. Also, gender and the process of second language acquisition are strongly correlated.
