Abstract

The history shows that essential needs of humanity are water, food and energy and with increasing demands for basic services, and growing population and desires for higher living standards, the need for more conscious stewardship of the vital resources required to achieve those services and desires has become both more obvious and urgent. Iraq is one of the Middle East and North African countries (MENA region). The country is currently facing a serious water scarcity problem like other countries in region. This problem is expected to be more severe in the future due to multilateral nature of water, especially in Kurdistan. The Tigris-Euphrates, with their tributaries, forms a major river system in Western Asia. The Tigris-Euphrates Basin is shared by Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Kuwait. The general climate of the region is subtropical, hot and arid. It has been estimated that the Tigris and Euphrates river discharges will continue to decrease with time, and they will be completely dry by 2040 and this scarcity endangers the security of water, energy and food. Improved water, energy and food security on a global level can be achieved through a nexus approach, an approach that integrates management and governance across sectors and scales. The government should take measures to have a strategic water management vision. .
