Photocatalytic ring opening of a-epoxyketones by 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium tetrafluoroborate (TPT) in glacial acetic acid resulted in the formation of diastereomeric hydroxtester compounds. The presecne of additional substituents on the parent molecule affect the rate of ring opening.
