Title Synthesis of 3-Pyrroline-5-ones in α-Pinene

Abstract N-substituted 3-pyrrolines are an important class of compounds with exhibit biological activities [1] and serve as useful synthetic intermediates [2]. There are also many examples of pyrroline containing natural products with interesting pharmacological activities [3]. We previously reported synthesis of 3-pyrroline-5-one derivatives by the three component reaction of ethyl 2-arylamino-2-oxoacetates and dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates in the presence of triphenylphosphine [4, 5]. We wish to report here reaction between achiral and chiral ethyl 2-arylamino-2-oxoacetates and dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates in the presence of triphenylphosphine in α-Pinene. The results show no enantioselectivity or diastereoselectivity when the reactions carried out in this solvent.
