Title Seismic Performance of Rectangular Liquid Storage Tanks by Case Study of the 2007 Noto Hanto Earthquake in Japan
Type Presentation
Keywords Seismic performance, Rectangular tank, Noto Hanto earthquake
Abstract The vulnerability of tanks to earthquake ground motion has been demonstrated in almost major past earthquakes. In regions of intense ground shaking many tanks have been severely damaged and some have failed with disastrous consequences. In this paper at first general flow for seismic design of aboveground tanks is proposed then seismic damage modes of tanks is listed. In second part, seismic design of rigid and flexible rectangular tanks on-ground, fixed to the foundation is discussed. In last part, as a case study, failure mode of a rectangular water reservoir tank in the 2007 Noto-Hanto earthquake in Japan is investigated.
