The organocatalytic carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction involving the addition of nucleophiles to activated alkynes has been drawing increasing attention [1]. Several organic catalysts have been investigated in detail in recent years [2]. We previously reported the reaction between cyclic 1,3-diketones and acetylenic esters in the presence of trialkylamines to produce the corresponding 2,5-dioxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2H-chromene-4-carboxylates [3]. In this work we wish to reporte the reaction between dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates 1 and acetylacetone in the presence of a catalytic amount of trimetylamine to produce isomeric mixture of E and Z dialkyl 2-(1-acetyl-2-oxopropyl)-2-butenedioates 3 in excellent yields
