Abstract

This presentation is an attempt to study narrative and the related concepts. Narrative has been defined differently throughout the last century. A number of critics from Roland Barthes to Jean F. Lyotard have approached the questions from different angles. Some theorists have endeavored to go back to the philosophical bases of narrative whereas others have been more structural and scientific in their attempts to analyze the framework of narrative. Barthes in his "Introduction to the Structural Analysis of Narrative" asserts that narrative includes a vast range of works not only in literature like fable, tale, novella, epic, tragedy, drama and comedy but also in other forms of art like mime, painting, cinema, etc. Lyotard considers narrative to be the source of all knowledge. Going through these definitions and approaches, this presentation attempts to illuminate the question of narrative.
