Abstract

Increase in population and industry development in the urban area of the city has adversely affect on the environment and air quality. In this regard, the development of scientific and practical landscape the best way to create a healthy environment for citizens seems necessary and inevitable. Turfgrasses are one of the key components of landscape as it plays an important role. This investigation was conducted to comparative vegetative growth four species of warm (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) and cool season grasses (Lolium perenne L. ‘Barball’, Poa pratensis L. ‘Merion’, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) in weather conditions of Sanandaj city. The experiment was performed as a complete randomized block design with 4 treatments (turfgrass types) and four replications (individual plots measured 2 m2 ) and seeds were sown in April 2010. At the end of experiment (September 2010) the turfgrasses were compared by measuring chlorophyll index, rooting depth, verdure, root and clipping fresh weight and time required to seed emergence. The highest chlorophyll index, verdure, root and clipping fresh weight were, obtained in Lolium. The results indicated that Cynodon had the highest rooting depth, although had no significant difference with Festuca. The highest time required to seed emergence was showed in Cynodon culture.
