Abstract

Silver chalcogenides, particularly Ag2S and Ag2Se semiconductor materials attracted much attention because of its promising optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties which find application in photovoltaic cells, photoconductors, IR detectors, magnetic field sensors, solid state electrochemical sensors, optical filters and super-ionic conductors [3,4]. To date, several methods have been suggested for the synthesis of silver sulfide (Ag2S) nanocrystals in different matrices, including silica thin film glasses [5], zeolites [6] and polymers [7], and also, their crystal structures, light absorbability, fluorescence characteristic and self-organization into 2D and 3D super-lattices [1,2] have been reported. Here, a new single step method to synthesize silver sulfide (Ag2S) nanoparticles at mild condition under nitrogen atmosphere without pH adjustment and/ or high temperature is represented. Ag2S nanoparticles were synthesized via thermal decomposition method by using readily available silver (I) nitrate as a precursor and TGA as a surfactant. silver(I) sulfide Ag2S nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transition electron microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM) and (FT-IR) and semiconductivity properties was studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The particles size calculated by X-ray is found to be around 34 nm and is in good agreement with TEM images. This nanoparticle could be classified as WBG semiconductors with band gape equal to 3.141 eV.
