Abstract

Groundwater quality as well as quantity of groundwater is important for various uses such as agriculture and drinking. Water quality analysis is an important part of groundwater studies. One of the elements of water pollution is arsenic. Arsenic (As) is a metalloid element that is widely distributed in the natural environment and is known to be carcinogenic, causing deformities and mutations. The maingoal of this investigation is analyzing the groundwater resources quality and contamination of waters with arsenic in study area with emphasis on the geomorphological characteristics of the outer section of caves basin and within the caves. The study area is located in west and northwest of Iran (Northern Zagros) and includes Kermanshah, Kurdistan and west Azerbaijan provinces. Based on my studies in 2015, underground waters, which are widely distributed in karstic areas of west of Iran, for example in Karaftu cave and Takht-e-sloyman vauclusien spring, are reported to be repeatedly contaminated with arsenic. This research is an analytical and applied research and the nature and methods of this research are qualitative. This study has three methods: library studies, field works and laboratory methods. Novelty and innovation of this study is systemic evaluating of the risks of arsenic contamination in karstic caves. Paying attention to both human and natural features (spatially morphological factors) on pollution of karstic caves water is another innovation of this research and this research can fill this gap.
