We introduce the notion of mapping of asymptotic contraction type which is a generalization of the notion of asymptotic contraction introduced by Kirk and is not a particular case of Suzuki's notion of asymptotic contractions of Meir-Keeler type. We present fixed point theorems for this class of mappings that are alternative generalizations of Kirk's theorem
