Detergent and dispersant additives are widely used as additives in lubricants to prevent/diminish carbon and sludge deposits which are undesired in engines. In this communication synthesis of over-based calcium sulfonates from heavy alkylbenzene sulfonates (HABS) is introduced and the optimum conditions for maximizing the total basic number (TBN) of the over-based calcium sulfonate which affect its performance is determined experimentally.
