Abstract

The present study has been written with the aim of investigating English word polysemy based on cognitive semantics theory to study how Persian language learners to learn English vocabularies with the concepts used in cognitive semantics such as, prototype, polysemy, categorization, etc. After the semantic analysis of English vocabularies based on the model of Dirven & Verspoor (2004), it was found that the meanings of words are classifiable based on theoretical approaches on cognitive semantics. Also, semantically the words include a semantic network in which the notion of meaning core or prototype places in the center of the semantic network and the other meanings places in borders. The present study seeks to answer this question that how the concepts discussed in cognitive linguistics can be used for teaching English vocabulary. The methodology used in this research for investigating the meanings of English words is descriptive-analytical method. In this way, after the studies in relation to the literature of cognitive linguistics and the opinions of experts in this field, the cognitive theory was considered as the framework of this research. Generally, the knowledge of learners in learning the cognitive structure of the word meanings has a meaningful relationship with his/ her learning. Also, the results obtained in relationship with the semantic analysis of English vocabularies which is based on the concepts discussed in cognitive approach confirms the discussed hypothesis in this research.
