Abstract

The study of groundwater quality in karstic areas is very important. In this study, chemical pollution of karstic water of Saholan cave was assessed through sampling and chemical tests. Also, the factors contributing to water pollution of the cave have been identified through field observations and interviews with experts. The samples were taken from four paints in the inside and outside of the cave. Three water samples were collected from inside the cave and one sample was taken from a river near the cave. Heavy metals concentrations have been measured in the laboratory. Electrical conductivity was measured by EC meter and the potential hydrogen (pH) of the water was also measured by pH meter. Arsenic and lead have been obtained by absorption spectrometry method and iron and manganese have been measured by flame method. The results were compared with drinking water standards. Based on the results, the concentration of elements such as arsenic, iron and manganese is higher than drinking water limit. The high concentration of elements can be probably caused by natural processes (soil washing and mixing with polluted groundwater) or human activities (waste disposal, mining and agricultural activities).
