The objective of this study involves the modelling and development of a sorting machine for apple fruit based on the fruit’s weight. After computing and data processing, the fruit was delivered through conveying duct toward one of the six gates and chutes. The gates were manipulated by pneumatic cylinders and magnetic valves which operated by a weight control unit. The duct slope was optimized based on the minimum bruising effect produced by the machine while the sorting process. To avoid mechanical damage in the fruits, the duct slope was fixed at 0.04 which produces the maximum fruit velocity of 1 m/s. Acceptable performance of the sorting machine, with respect to fruit bruising, was approved by the results of the experimental sorter evaluation. The sorting capacity of the machine was 130 kg/h.
