Abstract

The participation of citizens in scientific research leads to an increase in public engagement, as well as an increase in awareness among volunteers about environmental science and wildlife. Currently, the information derived from citizen science projects is becoming a crucial resource in identifying and determining the distribution range of biodiversity worldwide. This study was conducted from March 2022 to the end of August 2023 to collect and record the points and determining the distribution range of amphibian and reptile species in the west of the country in Kurdistan Province. In this study, volunteers observed amphibians and reptiles in their natural habitat, took picture, and recorded the location. Then, they sent data to herpetologists for identification. Based on the results of this study, thirty-six species of reptiles and amphibians, including Bufotes (Bufotes) viridis sitibundus, Hyla savignyi, Pelophylax cf. bedriagae, Rana macrocnemis, Neurergus derjugini derjugini, N. d. microspilotus, Salamandra infraimmaculata semenovi, Laudakia nupta, Paralaudakia caucasia, Trapelus ruderatus, Pseudopus apodus, Cyrtopodion scabrum, Asaccus kurdistanensis, Apathya cappadocica muhtari, Eremias montana, Lacerta media media, Ophisops elegans, Timon kurdistanica, Heremites septemtaeniatus, Eumeces schneideri, Ablepharus pannonicus, Dolichophis jugularis, D. schmidti, Eirenis (Pediophis) collaris, E. (P.) punctatolineatus, Hemorrhois ravergieri, Platyceps najadum, P. rhodorachis ladacensis, Telescopus fallax, Natrix tessellata, Xerotyphlops vermicularis, Malpolon insignitus fuscus, Eryx jaculus, Macrovipera lebetinus obtusa, Montivipera raddei kurdestanica, Mauremys caspica, and Testudo graeca were identified in Kurdistan Province and their distribution range was determined.
