Abstract

The present study was conducted in the Saqqez city of Kurdistan province, Iran, in order to study the technical efficiency of wheat farmers. The data were collected from both rainfed and irrigated farms in three different areas (mountain, semi-plain and plain), based on two stage cluster random sampling, for agricultural year 2003-2004. In total 210 farmers were interviewed. With respect to the coefficient of multiple determinations (R2) of estimated transcendental production function for rainfed farms, the variables included in this model are able to explain 76.2% of variation in the average production of rainfed barely per hectare. The significant variables in the estimated model were seed, machinery and plant protection chemicals were significant.the technical efficiency for rainfed check-pea farms the study area determind and the result showed, in plain area most of the farmers belonged to low category(40.7 per cent) followd by poor, medum and high efficiency category(38.9 and 18.5 and 1.9 per cent, respectively),and there was no farmers in very high cayegory group.in semi-plain area most of the farmers belonged to poor category(63.2 per cent) followed by low and medium category(26.3 and 10.5 per cent) and there were no farmers in very high efficiency categories in semi-plain area. In mountain area most of farmers were belonged to poor category (51.4 per cent) followed by low and medium categories commonly(24.3 per cent). At the aggragate, most of the farmers belonged to poor categories(31.1, 16.9 and 7per cent, respectively). The average of technical efficiency in all the three areas was 0.616, 0.563 and 0.570 in that order. The same for the entire area was 0.583 they showed that rained check-pea in the plain area belong to medium class and rests of order areas ‘ farmers were poor regard to technical efficiency.
