Today, the use of mechanized tunnel boring machines is incising. The successful application of these machines requires the accurate design of the project with regard to the condition of the tunnel, operators, skilled supporting staff, experienced maintenance group and an efficient supervision. Reliability analysis can predict the failure rate and estimate the reliability of a system. In this study, to assess the performance of the earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine operating in Line 1 of the Tabriz Metro was considered. By examining the overall structure of the machine, five subsystems were identified: the mechanical subsystem, electrical subsystem, hydraulic subsystem, compressed air subsystem, and water subsystem. Data from approximately 26 months of operational downtime due to failures were utilized. Statistical analyses indicated that the failure data for all subsystems follow classic statistical distribution functions. Consequently, by deriving the parameters of failure density distribution of the functions, the reliability of each subsystem was determined. The results showed that the mechanical subsystem has the minimum reliability value. Based on the findings, the reliability of the studied machine reaches zero after approximately 60 hours of tunnel boring operations. Therefore, to improve performance and reduce unexpected downtimes of the boring machine, a preventive maintenance program for the tunnel boring machine on Line 1 of the Tabriz Metro is proposed.
