Abstract

Modern power systems face new technical challenges arising from the increasing penetration of power-electronic-based distributed generators (DGs) and renewable energy sources (RESs). Increasing DGs/RESs penetration level may adversely affect frequency response and system control, and lead to degraded performance of traditional control schemes. This, in turn, may result in large frequency deviations and, potentially, system instability. In many power systems, advanced measurement devices such as phasor measurement units (PMUs) and modern communications devices are already being installed to perform a wide-area measurement system (WAMS). Using this system, the parameters of existing power system frequency controllers can be adjusted by an on-line data-driven control mechanism. The PMU data after filtering are used to estimate some important parameters in the system. These parameters are then used in the control tuning algorithm that will adapt the controller parameters in frequency and power fluctuation control. Therefore, the controller’s parameters are adapted according to the current status of the system. This speech provides a thorough understanding of the basic principles of the measurement based data-driven approaches for frequency response modeling and control synthesis problems.
