Abstract

During the past two decades, severe plastic deformation (SPD) has attracted increasing attention from the research community due to the potential to fabricate bulk nanostructures and ultrafine-grained materials. The equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is used as one of the most effective methods for severe plastic deformation. However, non-equal-channel angular pressing (NECAP) was developed to enhance the efficiency compared to ECAP by achieving higher strain in one pass rather than many passes of sequential ECAP. In this study, the effect of the NECAP process and peak-aging heat treatment on the hardness, and corrosion resistance of the 6061-aluminum alloy sample was investigated. The corrosion behavior of samples was investigated using electrochemical analysis methods including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization and performed at room temperature for each sample in a solution containing 3.5 % NaCl. it was observed that the hardness increased after NECAP process by 92% for annealed samples and 18% for peak-aged samples. The resistance against corrosion increased after the NECAP process by 344% for annealed samples and 382% for peak-aged samples. The effect of the NECAP process on the hardness and corrosion resistance of Annealed samples was more than in peak-aged samples.
