Title Study of Crack Occurrence and its Effects on Large Underground Concrete Caverns
Type Presentation
Keywords crack- concrete- cavern- plastic analysis- smeared model
Abstract Study of crack and crush in concrete structures is one of the controversial issues of concrete structure. The most reliable method for investing such problem is using a combination of analytical and experimental methods. In this paper the problem of cracking in the underground concrete structure of Masjed Soleiman hydro power plant was investigated through study of measurements and also analytical modeling of critical components. The problem was raised due to underestimating of swelling behavior of mud stone layers crossing the cavern which was intensified due to raise in water level in the reservoir of the dam. The study showed that if the crack distribution is not controlled in such structures which contain dynamic rotating machines and located in seismic zones may highly affect the long term behavior of the structure and reduce the effective life time. It was generally seen that for underground concrete structures the symmetry in stiffness and ductility can help to control such anomaly cracking.
